The First Time

(First published on my Goodreads blog on August 14, 2012.)
The first time the magic came through me I wrote “If I Could Only Sparkle.”
Of course, I had a different title, but I read it to a couple of friends. I used the “southern” accent I wrote it in, and I cried because I wrote it and it was magic.
One friend thought I had a great writing talent. The other asked if I’d ever read some other popular author whose name escapes me. Well, one out of two ain’t bad.
I put the beginnings of the story on a writer’s website for critique. The site has a lot of folks who live “over the pond” (that’s over the Atlantic Ocean) so the dialect didn’t go over very well. I was reading a lot of their stuff and I wasn’t having as much trouble with their Scottish and Irish ways as they were having with mine.
Faulkner, how did you do it?
I figured if I wanted the story to ever sell it had to be readable and translatable, so I toned it down. I think the finished product still allows for the colloquialism without all the apostrophes.
Live and learn, one step at a time.
The story is Book 2 in PAINTED TREE; Two Novellas. I’ve had good comments on it from those who have read it.
A few years after I wrote that story, and was re-reading it, I had to figure all the events that went on before the story, so I felt it was a story in itself. Thus I created “In Blood There is No Honor.” It’s Book 1 of PAINTED TREE: Two Novellas.
I call it a Large Print Edition because the font is larger than normal, but not too large.
The book is available on most book selling sites, if not all. I’ve even found it on eBay and Amazon with used, like new versions for sale.
It’s also available in Kindle.
I will be re-publishing each story separately in a smaller, regular sized font, and smaller booklets for those who like to carry along a book, not an electronic device.
If you have read either story, or plan do read them, please leave a review. I get emails, but folks seems to fear making a statement on line for the public. Thanks in advance.
